On this day 28 years ago, Dr. Dre released “ The Chronic”, his debut studio album. The Chronic featured 3 singles “Nuthin’ But A G Thang”, “Dr. Day” & “Let Me Ride”; all Top 10 Billboard Hits which helped the album debut at #3 on the Billboard 200. Just under a year later in November 1993, the album was certified 3x platinum. The album title & cover pays homage to good weed & Zig-Zag Rolling Papers packaging at the time. The Album would host diss songs & bars aimed at Dre’s former partner, Eazy-E, who would secretly get paid from The Chronic due to a contract Eazy had Dre signed as members of N.W.A. . Although Dr. Dre’s solo debut, he featured the upcoming Snoop Doggy Dogg throughout the album to help Snoop’s career take off. The Chronic helped further the influence of Gangsta Rap, popularized G-Funk within the genre & is regarded by many as one of the most important albums of all-time. In 2020, The Chronic was chosen by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
